Published Work

Here is a selection of work that has been published to date.

Best Mate - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine April 2008.

This was featured in the reader gallery. Although it didin't win it was the first time my work had been published in a magazine so I was extremely pleased.

It was taken as I was setting up to take a similar picture for a competition. The theme was texture and detail. I had the idea to take a picture of a tongue and was going to use my wife as the model. I had also bought some "Love Heart" sweets - See Here - to use as an alternative. While I was waiting I practised on myself with a sweet on my tongue. I couldn't see what the results looked like until I had taken the picture. Of all the shots I liked this one the best and didn't use the "model" shots. I will admit to whitening and straightening my teeth a little which was obviously worthwhile as, if you see this video, they do mention my good teeth.
Lizard - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine May 2008.

This was taken in a restaurant in Cuba on the last day of our holiday. Luckily I had the camera on me when this little fella came along. He wasn't fazed at all by people crowding round him and took small pieces of food from the floor. As he climbed the pillar next to our table he changed colour from brown to green and didn't mind at all stopping to have his photo taken.

At the scene - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This was taken as part of a series of 7 conceptual images for Digital SLR User magazine's "Samsung Assignment"

The premise is that you send in a portfolio of ten images and if chosen you win a Samsung GX20 14Mp camera. You then agree to take a series of pictures for inclusion in the magazine.

This first one was taken on an unopened road in Swindon. I parked the car and set two speedlights, triggered wirelessly, inside. I then set up the camera on a tripod, checked the composition and stood up close to the camera so that I was out of focus. There was quite a lot of post processing done to remove various barriers and signs to make the road look open but deserted.

Believe - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This was taken as part of a series of 7 conceptual images for Digital SLR User magazine's "Samsung Assignment"

This was taken on the same day as the above. I was trying to talk Carol, my wife, into coming out to the deserted road but she was having none of it. I was inspired that day after looking through a book "Beneath the roses" by Gregory Crewdson. I have always liked his work and decided that an indoors shot would be easier to set up and take than trying to convince Carol to step outside. If I could change anything about this I would have more clutter on the floor. I do have to give Kudos to Carol for having the guts to appear in her pyjamas in a national magazine.

M4 Roses - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This was taken as part of a series of 7 conceptual images for Digital SLR User magazine's "Samsung Assignment"

Taken on a bridge over the M4 near Swindon. I was inspired by the front cover of a National Geographic book "Love". I wanted to replicate that picture with the face obscured by flowers, but do it in one of my favourite locations. This was shot over two nights and is a composite of two pictures. The first night I only had one flash and it was difficult not to get movement. I bought another flash the next day and we re shot the thing again. Unfortunately being a night shoot it was hard to focus and we had to move quickly a) because it was freezing and b) for fear of being arrested for using flash on a motorway bridge. We did have a car come and park up next to us which was quite unsettling but nothing untoward happened. With the two images merged together I think it creates quite a striking picture.

The Dawn of Summer - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This was taken as part of a series of 7 conceptual images for Digital SLR User magazine's "Samsung Assignment"

This was a simple idea and taken in an oilseed rape field next to the M4 bridge in the above picture. It reminds me of the "I'd like to give the world a coke" advert from the 70's. Although simple we still had quite a lot of gear to balance the light See here I quite liked this but I loved the same picture taken with my Canon. Here

Wrong Turn - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This was taken as part of a series of 7 conceptual images for Digital SLR User magazine's "Samsung Assignment"

This was taken on the same day as the above, in fact we drove to this location from the last one. I had the idea, again inspired by Crewdson, of a girl stranded alone on a deserted road. I couldn't get anything to look as I wanted so I decided to lower the viewpoint and stand in the photo myself. Camera was set to timer and two speedlights with blue gels were triggered wirelessly in the car.

Lost/Found - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This was taken as part of a series of 7 conceptual images for Digital SLR User magazine's "Samsung Assignment"

This was taken because I didn't think I'd got enough. Even though the magazine's brief was two or three images I was on a roll. I was trying to get the look of the scene of a sci-fi movie where there is something lurking in the shadows that the character is reaching for. Kind of Dark Star meets Aliens. I would have loved to have some kind of tentacle in the foreground but where do you get one of those at short notice and try explaining it to the wife. I wasn't actually smoking the cigar. I added the lit end and smoke afterwards in post.

White Lorry - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine June 2008.

This is the odd one out of the group. I was trying to get something arty but it wasn't happening. I decided to get some shots of the bridge itself as it was an interesting shape. I was waiting for the traffic to get some blurred speedy type objects and caught this one in the perfect position. Not only that but it was plain white. Bonus!

Harrier - Featured in Digital SLR User Magazine August 2008.

This was featured as one of the runners up in an "Airshows" competition. The shot was taken at Kemble Air Day 2007. I have added a depth map in photoshop and converted to mono.

Blu Ju - Featured in Digital Photographer - The art of Photography - yearbook 2008.

Taken in my back garden one morning before work and given a Cyanotype treatment in Lightroom. This was featured in the macro section. Unfortunately the yearbook is hard to find but can be ordered from the Digital Photographer magazine website.

Force Field - Featured in Digital Digital SLR User magazine.

This is dangerous photography - EXTREME - Hanging off the back of my friend's truck while he screamed around the terminal D car park at DFW airport in Dallas Texas. (By screaming I mean all of maybe 2 mph). This has been chosen for the readers pictures section of the January issue.
